Laughter often came from Ramu’s side of the office, drawing smiles from his coworkers. He had a natural charm and always seemed to know how to make people feel valued. Ramu could read a room, spot someone’s insecurities, and use them to his benefit. He made everyone feel like they shared a special connection with him, as if they were his close confidant.
One day, he sat next to Taara at lunch. With a practised smile, he leaned in just a little, tilting his head in a way that made him seem genuinely concerned. There was a brief pause before he spoke, as if searching for the right words. “I’ve always been terrible with deadlines. I used to lie about how much work I had done just to avoid criticism. I’m sure you’ve been there too, right?”
Taara nodded, feeling a quick sense of connection. “I guess I sometimes avoid confrontation,” she said. “I don’t like letting people down.” Ramu listened closely, as if her words really mattered. He shared another personal flaw, helping Taara relax. She remembered a time years ago when a colleague admitted his fears with real honesty, no hidden motives or rehearsed words. His voice had been shaky and genuine, and it stayed with her. Ramu’s confession, by contrast, felt a little too polished.
Over time, he would share just enough to make Tara feel like she could trust him, always asking the right questions to get her to open up. He was skilled at pretending to be vulnerable, making her feel like they were equals. But one afternoon, as he turned the conversation back to her worries, he tried to make her feel low by using what she told him, believing him, and Tara felt uneasy. Had he ever really shared anything real? Doubt crept in. As the office grew quiet, she wondered why his words sounded perfect but revealed so little. She realised he never talked about anything truly important, only about small flaws that made her feel safe sharing. She began to set clear boundaries and stopped sharing too much. With time, she noticed that her new clarity made team interactions more honest and respectful, helping her build stronger, more collaborative relationships at work. Others followed her example, and it became a quiet shift within the team, encouraging openness while also protecting space for authentic connection.
Moral of the story:
Be careful around people who try to win your trust with fake vulnerability.
π Protect your boundaries,
π trust your instincts, and
π Watch out for anyone who only shares part of the truth.
What is one small boundary you can set today?
Promise yourself to notice your limits, speak up if you feel uncomfortable, or keep something private if it matters to you. Taking even one small step can turn awareness into real change.
