The Night Ordinary People Became Part of Evil

A REAL Case Study | Nazi Germany, November 9, 1938

Imagine waking up to discover that the neighbour who greeted you yesterday is destroying your shop today.

On 9 November 1938, Nazi-organized violence swept across Germany. Jewish shops were shattered, synagogues burned, and terrified families were attacked.

This was Kristallnacht ........... the Night of Broken Glass.

But the most frightening part wasn't only the violence.

It was the behaviour of ordinary people.

Some joined the attacks. Others watched silently. Police officers, ordered not to interfere, stood aside.

People who had once lived as neighbours now became attackers, spectators, or silent witnesses.

How could ordinary human beings allow such cruelty?

Psychology reveals three powerful mechanisms:

1. Emotional Contagion: Hatred can spread through crowds. When everyone around you acts aggressively, cruelty can begin to feel normal.

2. Obedience to Authority: When powerful leaders approve wrongdoing, people may obey rather than question, shifting responsibility onto their superiors.

3. Moral Disengagement: Propaganda turns human beings into perceived enemies, allowing people to justify cruelty as duty or loyalty.

These mechanisms explain behaviour; they never excuse it.

TheMoral

The most dangerous moment is when people stop asking, "Is this right?" and start asking, "Is everyone else doing it?"

A crowd can normalize cruelty. Authority can legitimize it.

But neither can erase personal responsibility.

Never confuse obedience with morality, or silence with innocence.

Your conscience matters most when following it becomes difficult.
