Samyama Holding Her Ground

Sunday lunch followed the same script.

“Vamsi earns three times what you do,” Uncle Mahesh announced across the table.

“ When will you become someone worth respecting, like my SON, by making huge money and buying a home? ”

Samyama stared at her plate. She designed a community library, work she loved.

Yet his words made her feel twelve again: small, ashamed, desperate to prove herself.

That night, she almost opened another job application. Instead, she wrote on a sticky note: My worth is not my salary. I can leave a conversation that hurts me.

The next Sunday, Mahesh began again. Samyama felt her pulse race. She pressed her feet down, exhaled slowly, and spoke.

“I’m glad Vamsi is doing well. Please stop comparing our incomes.”

Mahesh laughed.

Sam: “You are too sensitive. You can't achieve anything without that competitive spirit. I was the 1st person in our family to get an IAS interview, I am ----  ” [ Unlimited greatness about him and his family continues............... ]

“Maybe you see it that way, Yad bhavam tad bhavati kada Uncle Ji,” she replied. “But if the comparisons continue, I’ll step outside.”

He rolled his eyes and repeated the question.

Samyama stood up. Her hands trembled as she carried her glass to the kitchen. Outside, she sat beneath the neem tree, breathing until the tightness in her chest eased.

Vamsi joined her. “I hate it too,” he whispered. “He is old, sister; just ignore whatever he says”

For the first time, they laughed together, making jokes about elders.

Mahesh did not change that day. But Samyama did. She returned when the conversation moved on, not to win approval, but to enjoy her family on her own terms.

Moral:

A boundary is not a demand that others change. It is a promise about what you will do to protect your dignity.
