Case Study: Surya, the Consultant

Client Profile: Surya, a 38-year-old management consultant in Hyderabad, came to therapy because he couldn’t sleep and felt crushed by “imposter syndrome on steroids.” Outwardly, he’d just landed a senior partnership at his firm __an achievement admired by friends and family. But at night, fear pressed on his chest, and he watched the city lights outside his window, feeling more alone with every sleepless hour.

The Conflict: To get promoted, Surya quietly “rounded up” his team’s quarterly numbers__a shortcut to edge out a rival. No one at the Jubilee Hills office noticed, and he got the job. But guilt gnawed at him, keeping him up at night. He grew anxious over every audit, scanned emails obsessively, and avoided chai breaks with coworkers, fearing someone would find out. That one shortcut left him trapped in shame and endless insomnia.
Therapeutic Intervention: In therapy, we mapped his “inner compass.” I asked,
“Can you live with this secret in a city where word spreads fast?”
We reframed his insomnia as his conscience refusing to let him rest. Surya realised he had to choose to keep hiding or restore his peace by owning up, whatever the cost.
Outcome: Surya, trembling, confessed to his Hyderabad board. He lost the partnership but stayed in a senior role. His insomnia faded within weeks. Colleagues were shocked, but eventually respected his honesty. For the first time in years, he felt truly at peace, enjoying a quiet chai on his balcony as the city bustled below.
Moral: Surya learned that shortcuts can cost us peace, but honesty gives lasting strength. Anywhere on earth, a clear conscience is life’s real luxury.
